Tasks Don't Add Up Into Strategy on Their Own

Tasks don't add up into strategy on their own.

I keep seeing this in the organizations we work with. Incredibly busy. Real work, real outcomes, every hour accounted for. And motionless at the strategic level, because nothing connects what got done this week to where the organization is trying to go.

The connective questions are the missing layer. Which of this work matters most? What is it building toward? What would change if it worked?

Organizations produce enormous amounts of work every week. What they rarely produce is a system that connects that work back to strategic intent. Without that layer, activity scales. Progress doesn't. And the person expected to build that connection is usually the same person doing the tasks.

Becky wrote this week about what happens when someone finally asks the connecting questions, and what it costs when nobody does. Worth your time: No One Ever Asked You to Think That Big
